A.J. Brown Scouting Report

STRENGTHS: A.J. Brown is a very good route runner…a student of the game…explodes in and out of his breaks…strong hands…plays well through contact…sturdily built—should have no problem dealing with the physical nature of the NFL…strong after the catch…has a great feel for the game…

WEAKNESSES: A.J. Brown does not possess the high-end speed that raises the eyebrows of the NFL Scouting Community…not a dynamic playmaker…was not asked to make the big play with other, more explosive WR teammates around him…played the bigger, slot role—perhaps due to concern of a lack of speed…don’t see the consistent separation…has not consistently shown the efforts to be a willing blocker in the run game…

COMP: Chris Godwin

OVERALL: A.J. Brown was originally hyped as the head of the class for the WR position in 2018-’19, and while there remains a lot to like here, most in the draft community have soured on his potential somewhat. The concern is that he does possess the dominant physical profile, nor does he have high-end speed. As a standout recruit, Nick Saban compared him to Julio Jones—a comparison that was unfair at the time, and now looks totally off the mark. He is a bit of a tweener. Given the fact that some of his contemporaries are gaining some positive momentum, that could cause A.J. Brown to slide further than originally anticipated. I have him marked as a 2nd-3rd round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft.
