Byron Murphy Scouting Report

STRENGTHS: Byron Murphy is one of the more versatile defensive backs in the entire 2019 class…he plays very well in man to man coverage, as well as in zone…a high IQ player who adapts well to any of a variety of routes thrown at him…Murphy has outstanding feet…able to transition in and out of breaks with ease…as quick as any defensive  back in this class…able to react rapidly…outstanding  ball skills…aware when the ball is in the air…high-level fluidity…doesn’t mind mixing it up and can deliver the blow when necessary…has good length to challenge taller, physical WR…

WEAKNESSES: At 6’0 and just 175—there are physical limitations to Byron Murphy…will Byron Murphy be able to match up with the physically imposing WR at the NFL level…run defense will always be an issue…can get engulfed by larger blockers…not the most experienced defensive back…does not dislodge receivers off of their route when in press coverage…can bite a bit too hard on a pump fake…

COMP: Darius Slay

OVERALL: Byron Murphy has climbed the ranks at the CB position to the #1 spot…Murphy have the pure cover skills that defensive coordinators love…he can play in any scheme and can line up on the outside, or in the slot…combine his ball skills with his short area quickness—and you can see how his game could translate to a playmaker on the back end in the NFL…I like Murphy more than most, but I don’t see any reason why he won’t be a Top 15-25 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
