Ed Oliver Scouting Report

STRENGTHS: Ed Oliver jumps off the page with elite quickness and penetrates the oppositions backfield with ease…has a nose for the ball…Ed Oliver has extreme agility for a defender in the interior…high motor player who maximizes his effort…extremely productive player who provided a high level of tackles in the backfield…a very fluid athlete…you have to feel encouraged by Ed Oliver’s draft process…he has shown the ability to add ‘good weight’ and still keep his speed and quickness…

WEAKNESSES: You have to wonder if Ed Oliver can hold up to the physicality at the next level…originally compared to Aaron Darnold, that comparison has proven to be a bit much…Darnold was 285 coming out of college—Oliver may have played around 270—big difference…most expect Ed Oliver to be a liability in the run game…did Ed Oliver take advantage of the competition he faced while at Houston..? Does not have the length that you’d prefer from your defensive tackles at the NFL level…

COMP: Tommie Harris

OVERALL: Ed Oliver is one of the more fascinating case studies heading into the NFL Draft…very productive and a very strong work ethic—you would think that this would be an open and shut case for Ed Oliver’s draft stock…one of the more pressing questions is “what is his playing weight?”…he could be a liability in run defense, but you have to imagine his pass rushing ability is going to be coveted in the pass happy NFL…rumor has it that he has turned off some teams in the interview process–something to monitor…he was once a lock for a Top 5 pick, I don’t see that as a certainty anymore…I do think there are many more positives than negatives when evaluating his game…so ultimately I believe Ed Oliver remains a Top 10-15 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
